Not sure how I feel about Yahoo! buying Tumblr. What are your thoughts?

Obviously buying tumblr alone is going against brand. I’ll be the optimist and say they will probably stay hands off and add some advertising/search integration. Hell maybe we’ll even get lucky and they’ll improve some of the stupid functionality such as how you reply. Of course they could just delete all the porn and piss off 80% of the site.

"One of our challenges is we have had an aging demographic,” said CFO Ken Goldman. “Part of it is..."

““One of our challenges is we have had an aging demographic,” said CFO Ken Goldman. “Part of it is going to be just visibility again in making ourselves cool, which we got away from for a couple of years”

-
“Yahoo, Tumblr tie-up in the works?” via CNET

When I talk to libertarians and socialists, they have this weird belief that everybody’s this abstract robot that won’t ever get sick or have kids or get old. It’s like everybody’s this eternal freelancer who can afford downtime and can self-fund until they find their magic moment or something. The way society actually works is there’s some mechanism of basic stability so that the majority of people can outspend the elite so we can have a democracy. That’s the thing we’re destroying, and that’s really the thing I’m hoping to preserve. So we can look at musicians and artists and journalists as the canaries in the coal mine, and is this the precedent that we want to follow for our doctors and lawyers and nurses and everybody else? Because technology will get to everybody eventually.”

- Jaron Lanier: The Internet destroyed the middle class - Salon.com (via infoneer-pulse)

Photo

stoweboyd:

Of course, it was a legal fiction. Music downloaded was licensed and, indeed, the same was always true for software. And consumers were reminded of this every time they accepted terms and conditions but somehow the fact that you never really had to ask permission to use software gave a sense of ownership. I suspect it is a form of repugnance to non-ownership that kept this model going.
Corporations and small businesses use new technology and strong leadership to make their operations more successful, why not cities? This remarkable success story in South Bend, a city of 130,000, shows how strong leadership, next-generation technologies, and public-private collaboration can help make cities work a lot better, even at a time when public funds are in short supply. These days, cities are tremendous engines for innovation and economic growth. Young people, professionals, and empty-nesters are drawn to them in search of excitement, culture, and career opportunities. We have the potential to spark a true renaissance for cities, so they’re not just bigger — they’re better.
