Techerous

My name is Bill, I am a recent graduate in Information Sciences and Technology from Penn State University and this is a place for me to post or give my 2 cents on the fascinating world of technology. I am now working for a pretty big technology related company whose name I will leave out just to avoid any possible complications, however far-fetched them happening may be. Music gets included from time to time as well.

Could coding be the next mass profession?

roybahat:

Like farming was in the 17th century, factory work during the industrial revolution, construction during the Great Depression, and manufacturing after World War II. Better, because writing code is a creative act which can be done with or without a traditional (antiquated?) office-based job, and…

If you look at the workplace right now, most programming positions really don’t require much talent.  The valued positions are the one’s leading the teams and this is reflected in the pay.  Sure programmers start out well, but you need to be able to manage a project if you want to move up.  In a way I feel like this also addresses the income gap.  Getting a computer science degree requires going to college which costs a lot of money.  If our ‘menial’ jobs begin to involve coding, as some already have, how can those from the lower class have the opportunity to learn a skill that could give them the opportunity to move up?  Even if this means getting a bachelor’s later in their career, at least this presents the opportunity like there used to be, now simply graduating high school doesn’t mean anything.  Those with actual degrees will always have an advantage in terms of moving up and getting the more complex positions starting out, but more widespread coding would create more competition and speed up it’s evolution.
